The single most useful idea in DTF sizing is this: the physical size you press onto the shirt and the pixel size of your file are connected by DPI. DPI means dots per inch — how many pixels are packed into each printed inch. For DTF, the standard is 300 DPI.
That gives you one simple formula. To find how many pixels you need:
print width (inches) × 300 = pixels wide
So a 12-inch-wide adult front print needs 12 × 300 = 3,600 pixels of width. A 4-inch left chest logo needs 1,200 pixels. The height follows your design's aspect ratio — you only need to nail the longest dimension to size.
To go the other direction and check a file you already have, flip the formula:
pixels wide ÷ print width (inches) = actual DPI
A 2,400-pixel-wide file printed at 10 inches is only 240 DPI (2,400 ÷ 10) — below target, so it would print a touch soft. The DTF DPI calculator does this math for you and tells you the largest clean size your file supports.
These are the industry-standard widths apparel shops use day to day. Treat them as reliable defaults, then confirm with your printer for anything unusual. Every width below assumes a 300-DPI file.
The small logo placement over the left breast. Used for branded staff shirts, polos, and subtle designs. Keep it small — a left chest print larger than 4 inches starts to look oversized.
Pixels needed: 900–1,200 px wide at 300 DPI
Smaller bodies need smaller prints. A 10-inch adult design will wrap around a toddler. Youth fronts are typically 6–8 inches; toddler and infant sizes drop to 5 inches or less.
Pixels needed: 1,500–2,400 px wide at 300 DPI
The most common placement. A full chest graphic on an adult tee is usually 10–12 inches wide. 11 inches is a safe all-around default that fits S through XXL without looking stretched.
Pixels needed: 3,000–3,600 px wide at 300 DPI
Full back prints and oversized fashion-style fronts. 13–14 inches is typical; some streetwear pushes to 15 inches. Confirm your printer’s max film width before going this large.
Pixels needed: 4,200 px wide at 300 DPI
Sleeve hits, hip placements, and small accent graphics. These are narrow placements, so legibility matters — avoid tiny text that vanishes once shrunk to size.

Find your target print width and read across for the minimum pixels you need. The height column shows a dash because it depends on your design's proportions — only the width is fixed by placement.

Bigger files are not always better
Going far above 300 DPI (like exporting a 4-inch logo at 4,000 px) does not improve the print — the press cannot resolve detail finer than its print resolution. It just makes a heavier file. Decide where the design lives on the garment — left chest, youth front, adult front, or back — and grab the standard width for that placement from the chart above. When unsure on an adult tee, 11 inches wide is a dependable default.
Multiply your target width by 300. That is the minimum pixel width your file needs to print sharp at 300 DPI. An 11-inch front needs ~3,300 px; a 3.5-inch left chest needs ~1,050 px.

Once individual designs are sized correctly, most printers combine several of them onto one film sheet to cut waste. The two standard DTF film widths are 22 inches (the common wide roll) and 12 inches (smaller jobs and desktop printers). Sheet height is flexible — you build it as long as your order needs.
The same 300-DPI rule applies to the whole sheet: a 22-inch-wide sheet is 6,600 pixels wide at 300 DPI. Each design keeps its own size on the sheet, so a left chest logo and a full back print can sit side by side as long as each fits the film width.

The constant is resolution: whatever size you print, the file should be 300 DPI at that size. For an 11-inch-wide adult front, that means roughly 3,300 pixels wide.

Yes — two ways. First, physically: a print wider than the garment or the printer’s film width will get cut off or rejected. Second, in pixels: a file far above 300 DPI (say 600+ DPI) wastes file size and processing time without improving the print, since the press cannot resolve detail finer than its print resolution. 300 DPI at your true print size is the sweet spot.
300 DPI at the final print size is the standard target. Below 200 DPI edges get soft; below 150 DPI the print looks visibly blurry. Above 300 DPI gives no visible benefit for DTF. Remember the DPI number in a file’s metadata can lie — what matters is pixels divided by print inches.
